Terminalia Arjuna, commonly known as arjuna, belongs to the family of Combretaceae. Its bark decoction is being used in the Indian subcontinent for anginal pain, hypertension, congestive heart failure, and dyslipidemia, based on the observations of ancient physicians for centuries.
The arjuna is seen across the Indian Subcontinent, and usually found growing on river banks or near dry river beds in Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Odisha and south and central India, along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. It has also been planted in Malaysia, Indonesia and Kenya.
The trees can commonly be found along river bank soils, streams, and ravines.
Tannins from the leaves/bark of the tree are known to enhance the synthesis of nitric oxide and relax vascular segments pre-contracted with norepinephrine. In addition to a flavonoids variety of tannins have been isolated from the bark of T. arjuna. Around fifteen types of tannins and their related compounds were isolated from the bark of T. arjuna and their structures were elucidated with the help of spectral analysis. Hydrolyzable tannins are castalagin, casuariin, casuarinin, punicalagin, pyrocatechols, punicallin, terchebulin and terflavin C were isolated from the bark of T. arjuna.45 Tannins are considered to have wound healing, astringent, hypotensive, antioxidant and antimicrobial effects - Source
