Aegle marmelos is native across the Indian subcontinent and Southeast Asia, and is cultivated throughout Sri Lanka, Tamilnadu, Thailand, and Malesia. It occurs in dry, open forests on hills and plains. The tree is considered to be sacred by Hindus. Its fruits are used in traditional medicine, and as food. It requires a pronounced dry season to give fruit. The orange fruits have an aromatic, pleasant-flavoured yellow pulp that is eaten either fresh or dry. The leaves and small shoots are eaten as salad greens. Flowers are fragrant.
The pods of the Bael Tree are often used in natural setups and can be hard wearing due to the tough shell of the pod. These items make a great hiding spot for many animals including fish and shrimp.
These pods are a long lasting botanical and are known to show minimal breakdown after months of submersion.
