Do Plants Grow in Blackwater Aquariums?

Due to the way a "Blackwater" aquarium is setup there's often questions if live plants can grow due to the limited lighting and the substrates being used. However there are many plants that will happily grow in these conditions. Some plants require limited lighting and not the intense full spectrum lighting that you often see in aquascaping setups. Additionally it's important to remember creating a biotope aquarium is all about replication the elements found in nature, plants don't grow in the way they are enhanced in planted aquascapes with the utilisation of CO2 systems. Plants that grow slower are usually a positive in that they require less maintenance and trimming.

Some recommendations are as follows:

  • Anubias
  • Amazon Sword
  • Cryptocoryne
  • Java Fern
  • Java Moss

Other plants that we have had success growing:

  • Hornwort
  • Jungle Vallisneria
  • Duckweed
  • Frogbit

This list is not limited to and remember success can be different in various water conditions and aquatic setups. As always it's best to try out different plants and see what works in the setup you are trying to create. Researching wild habitat's of these animals and see what is growing in these areas can also be of help.
